Experience

From November 2014 to November 2018
I served the people of Hernando County on the School Board. I was part of a team that took a $12 million deficit in 2014 to a $ 14.6 reserve in 2018 (report by Kendra Sitting, Director of Budget, HCSB 10/23/2018). I have a small business since the 1980’s.
I know how to work with other Board Members
Worked as a team to balance the budget. We instituted Performance Based Budgeting over a five year period. I also lived through a transition to a performance based system working with DCF in 2006.
The outcome was a more productive staff in part by offering bonuses for exceptional work along with lowered annual raises. Any work place change incurs difficulties and adjustments by employees. Each department is measured according to work performed, and evaluated in a slightly different manner. Goals are adjusted to reflect output in the private sector job market. This is not an easy transition and I have experience both directing this work and doing this work.

I started new programs in the Hernando County School District and helped to expand others using private funding. I know how to work public-private partnerships to the benefit of the County. This is another alternative to increasing taxes and fees to improve government and balance a budget.

Urban Gentleman’s Clubs in elementary schools is one example:

These clubs did not cost the district resources to institute
All funds needed were generated through private partnerships. These clubs are geared towards changing behavioral attitudes and produced favorable outcomes that work. Boys are required to act like gentlemen and talks from male role models revolved around soft skills lacking in schools today. In one year behavioral incidents in one elementary school dropped by 60% allowing for more instructional time and the overall grade of the school increased from a 79 to an 82. This is a win-win.

As part of the Educators’ Club of Timber Pines, we raised funds and donated performance gowns to the Powell Middle School Girls Chorus, they are wearing them today.

These are examples of experience in working with government in a leadership position. Talk to me one-on-one for a more detailed explanation and other examples.
